ABOUT
ELLEN
Ellen immigrated to the U.S. at age 6 and has worked hard all her life to achieve the American dream. She graduated from Bronx H.S. of Science, New York University (B.A.) and Hofstra Law School (J.D.). She and her husband, Richard Ma, have 2 wonderful sons. They also have a law office together, assisting small businesses and underserved communities with things such as criminal defense and landlord tenants issues. Ellen and her family moved to New Jersey from NYC when her sons were young because she knew New Jersey was the best state to live and raise a family.
When she was sworn-in in 2022, Ellen became the first East Asian woman to serve in the New Jersey Legislature. She currently serves as Chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee and Vice Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee. She is also a member of the Assembly Commerce, Economic Development & Agriculture Committee.

EDUCATION
Ellen wholeheartedly believes that education is not only how we teach our children right from wrong but also how low income individuals can escape poverty. As a mother of two, she is a passionate advocate for the next generation and ensuring that they have the opportunity to succeed - whether it's through higher education or trade school. A good education sets the next generation up for success. She is committed to increasing state funding for public schools, investing in STEM and expanding early childhood education programs.

Ellen's leadership is rooted in her belief that our community is our power. She works tirelessly to foster unity and promote equity. She believes that we are all one community, whether Asian American, Jewish American, African American or Hispanic American, we are all American and our collective success depends on all of us working together. She believes that our strength lies in our diversity and will fight to ensure that residents of all backgrounds are included and supported in our community, while celebrating the rich cultures that make New Jersey unique.
AFFORDABILITY
FOR NJ FAMILIES
She is committed to keeping New Jersey affordable so more people can move to the state and raise their families here. As a longtime commuter, she understands the importance of keeping jobs in the state and fights to bring more job creators to New Jersey, from small businesses to entrepreneurs and even corporate partners. She will always advocate for property tax relief, affordable housing, lower healthcare and pharmaceutical costs and reliable public transportation.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE
REFORM
As the Chair of the Judiciary, Ellen has legislated bills to ensure fair punishment, halt human trafficking, and protect victims while upholding due process. As we know, low-income and minority communities have been disproportionately impacted by mass incarceration. That's why Ellen continues to push for more restorative justice programs and re-entry services to reduce recidivism, helping formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society with access to education, job training, and mental health support. Ellen is also a strong advocate for sentencing reforms, alternatives to incarceration for non-violent offenses, and improved legal representation for those who cannot afford it, ensuring that justice is equitable for all.

A-4769 Makes various revisions to requirements for obtaining a firearm purchaser identification card, permit to purchase a handgun, and permit to carry a handgun; codifies sensitive places in which firearms and destructive devices are prohibited
A-4175 Concerns use of force by law enforcement officers under certain circumstances and requires certain reporting of use of force incidents.
